This study covered the response from the upper airway, lower epithelium (bronchiolar region) and the alveolus epithelium cultured at the air liquid interface (ALI), covering the main anatomical regions of the lung.

Utilized 3-D cell cultures models were from Epithelix Sarl (Switzerland) and included MucilAir , SmallAir and AlveolAir. Their response to whole smoke from 1R6F Kentucky Reference Cigarettes was studied using a VITROCELL VC 10 Smoking Robot and a VC 48 PLUS Exposure System.
