Review: Science meets Nature – VITROCELL at CORESTA – in Victoria Falls (ZW) during October 25-29, 2026

November 2, 2026

Last week, we participated in the CORESTA Congress 2026 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, held under the theme “Science for Sustainability and Harm Reduction in the Transforming Tobacco Landscape.”

CORESTA’s Tobacco Harm Reduction strategy increasingly emphasizes human-relevant New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assess the toxicological effects of Next Generation Products (NGPs), including heated tobacco products, e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products.

We actively contributed to the meetings of the NGTX – 21st Century Toxicology Task Force and the IVT – In Vitro Toxicity Sub-Group.

Our two joint scientific posters attracted considerable interest:

An Integrated Lung-on-Chip Platform Investigating Molecular Responses to Whole Cigarette Smoke Exposure (Alexis Technologies / VITROCELL)

Next-Generation High-Throughput In Vitro Hazard Assessment: A Comparison of Mechanistic Effects from Tobacco and Cannabis Aerosol (Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universität Basel / VITROCELL)

Special thanks to Michael Hollings from Labcorp for his comprehensive presentation on “In Vitro Assessment of Acute and Repeated Dose Toxicity of a Refillable Electronic Nicotine Delivery System Aerosol Using the Epithelix MucilAir™ Human Airway Model.”

The scientific exchange with leading scientists and regulatory experts was particularly valuable, highlighting the growing importance of standardized, reproducible and human-relevant in vitro exposure methodologies.
